Lockland celebrated the 150th anniversary of it's Incorporation in 1999! Lockland's development was the direct result of it's location on the Miami-Erie Canal. Following construction of four locks on the canal, the community was plotted in 1828 by Nicholas Longworth and Lewis Howell.

Early proprietors recognized the value of the locks, which remained operational until 1929. Not only did they serve as a major transportation route, the locks provided an abundance of water which attracted industry to the community. Their usefulness continued until the railroads began taking a toll on water traffic. The canal has since been replaced by I-75, and this is an asset on which we capitalize to keep us strong as we enter the next century.
